Assoc. Prof. Yordan Yordanov completed a hands-on Erasmus+ traineeship at the Gerner Lab, University of Vienna, led by Prof. Christopher Gerner. The training focused on untargeted mass-spectrometry proteomics, including sample preparation and bioinformatic analysis.
The work forms part of an ongoing study investigating how particulate pollution collected in Sofia affects cellular molecular responses. By measuring thousands of protein endpoints simultaneously, untargeted proteomics provides a systems-level view of both adaptive and potentially adverse cellular responses to environmental exposures.
The project brings together expertise in environmental sampling, cell-based toxicology, mass spectrometry and computational analysis across Bulgarian and Austrian partners. The next stage will extend the study toward a multi-omics design by integrating RNA-sequencing data with the proteomic profiles.
The visit was supported through Erasmus+ and represents an important step in expanding the experimental and computational omics capabilities available to the MU OmicsLab research programme.
