A new study by Yordan Yordanov, Siyana Hristova and Virginia Tzankova has been published in Pharmacia: “Context-dependent effects of rosmarinic acid on SH-SY5Y neurite morphology using a label-free, Parkinson’s disease-oriented image analysis workflow.”

The study investigates how rosmarinic and retinoic acid influence neurite-related morphology in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells under different experimental conditions. A central part of the work was the development of PhaseContrastNeuriteAnalyzer, a workflow designed to extract quantitative morphological information from ordinary phase-contrast microscopy images.

The project also illustrates how a student research question can evolve into a larger reproducible research output. The publication is accompanied by openly available source code and a FAIR-oriented microscopy dataset, allowing other researchers to inspect, reproduce and adapt the workflow.

Together, the paper, software and dataset form one of MU OmicsLab’s first fully connected open-science research packages.
